SONG REVIEW: Paloma Faith, Picking Up The Pieces

TITLE: Picking Up The Pieces
ARTIST: Paloma Faith
LABEL: RCA Records
RELEASED: May 21st 2012

The East London girl has returned to the music scene through the medium of her new single Picking Up The Pieces. It’s the first to be released from her new album Fall To Grace, which is released next week. A beautiful song with some serious hit potential, methinks!

Her last album Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful? remained in the UK top 40 album charts for over 40 weeks, spawning her hits New York and Upside Down. Fall To Grace promises to show more of Paloma’s unique quirkiness and the debut single from it is a powerful, heart-felt ballad, bursting with emotion.

A simple pop backing supports Paloma’s stunning vocal range, which is showed off to its utmost throughout the track. Her performance on this week’s The Voice results show will undoubtedly raise its profile and I’ll bet it’s gonna become a TV talent show regular over the coming year. It’s a real chest-belter of a song that takes the listener on a journey through heartache and acceptance of truth.

The lyrics speak for themselves and the story is pretty much laid out for all to see. It’s about being in love with someone who is still hung up on an ex, a situation that Paloma says “I’ve experienced [it] on a few occasions and so have quite a few people I know but I didn’t go into any of those experiences specifically.” Pain and insecurity thread through the entire length of the song- “Whose face do you see? Do you wish I was a bit more like her?”

Although it’s a tough subject to deal with, Paloma tackles it very well. It’s not riddled with cliches, which a song about something so heart-breaking could be. Paloma claims that Fall To Grace is a better example of her song-writing, as her first album was manipulated by the producers, due to her feeling “indebted, somehow to the label for signing me”. If Picking Up The Pieces is anything to go by, the new album should be something to get very excited about.
