SONG REVIEW: Fall Out Boy, My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)

fob1TITLE: My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)
BAND: Fall Out Boy
LABEL: Island Records
RELEASED: February 4th 2013

Having been a massive fan of Fall Out Boy throughout my teens, I was very excited indeed to see that they’d come back with a new single today. After a three year hiatus, it was uncertain whether we would ever see the Illinois band back together but they have now announced a new album and tour dates, as well as appearances at this year’s Reading and Leeds festivals.

Known for their upbeat pop-punk fronted by Patrick Stump’s unmistakeable vocal and their wordy song titles, the band are back on form and look set to score big chart positions with the comeback track which is the lead single from their fifth album Save Rock and Roll, which is released in April. If you’re not a long-time Fall Out Boy fan, then be warned: this song is very catchy indeed.

fob2Coming back with a bang and plenty of fire, My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark is a classic drum-led anthem with plenty of metallic guitars. It’s along the same lines as I Don’t Care and the heavier tracks from Folie à Deux but it has a darkness, which I don’t think we’ve ever really seen from them. During their break, they’ve definitely done some growing up and have returned with a burning vengeance that is brand new.

An angsty tone is present in the vocals and it’s a complete U-turn on their From Under The Cork Tree album with a hook that will fill you with that same fire and make you want to go smash things up too. The haunting warbles in the chorus amidst the “I’m on FIRE!”‘s is another element to it, which brings the band up-to-date and allows them to explore a different side to them that seems to have developed while they’ve been away.

It’s an awesome comeback that will no doubt receive great reviews and ensure that they have a successful return. I’m incredibly interested to see what other material they’ve been sitting on because it seems they’ve toughened up a whole lot since we last saw them.
